Convergence 2025 – International Chamber Music Festival
"I see music, I feel it, I touch it." (Bohuslav Martinů)
The first of the Convergence festival evenings dedicated to the music of Bohuslav Martinů will feature his sonatas and variations for cello. The first sonata, dedicated to French cellist Pierre Fournier, reflects the unrest in Europe on the eve of war. The second cello sonata, composed in 1941, was written after the composer emigrated to the USA. In this work, as in Variations on a Slovak Folk Song (1959), one senses Martinů's longing for his homeland, to which he was unable to return due to the regime. The selection of works for cello will be complemented by Variations on a Theme by Rossini, dedicated to another of the great cellists of the 20th century, Gregor Piatigorsky.
Convergences will feature works by Bohuslav Martinů performed by Jozef Lupták and Czech cellist Tomáš Jamník, whose recording of this composer's works for the Supraphon label was described by Harmonie magazine in 2008 as "the debut of the decade". The program will conclude with a work from Martinů's Paris period, Quartet for Clarinet, French Horn, Cello, and Snare Drum (1924).
