Convergence 2025 – International Chamber Music Festival
"In the concert hall, the listener forgets their own time and lives by the time of the music."
(Bohuslav Martinů)
After their appearance at Convergence dedicated to the music of Leoš Janáček, the Zemlinsky Quartet returns to Bratislava this October with the works of Bohuslav Martinů. The Czech composer created seven string quartets between 1918 and 1947.
His Second and Third Quartets were composed in the 1920s in Paris, where Martinů studied under Albert Roussel thanks to a scholarship. The introspective Second Quartet not only earned Martinů recognition in musical circles, but also led to a collaboration with the prestigious publisher Universal Edition in Vienna. The boldly experimental Third Quartet was written for the Roth String Quartet, an American ensemble specializing in contemporary music. Its premiere took place in the United States in 1932.
While Serenade No. 2 still belongs to Martinů’s Paris period, the Serenade for Two Clarinets and String Trio was composed during his tenure at Princeton University, where he taught composition.
