Review: Opening concert of the Prague Symphony Orchestra with Matinů's violin concerto on 16 and 17 September 2015
16 and 17 September 2015, 7.30 pm
Smetana Hall, Municipal House, Prague, CZ
Concerto for violin and orchestra No. 1, H 226
Prague Symphony Orchestra, Pietari Inkinen (conductor), Pavel Šporcl (violin)
When a new Chief Conductor opens a new season, the event can only be festive and memorable. And this one, with a programme that perfectly matches the personality of Pietari Inkinen, is both classic and modern at the same time. Symbolically, the concert’s programme consists of Finnish and Czech music. There is a unifying American thread as well: Martinů’s First Violin Concerto remained forgotten until 1968, when its manuscript was found in Washington. The Chicago Symphony Orchestra, under Georg Solti, performed its world premiere.
