BBC Music Magazine praises Isserlis' Martinů
The London-born cellist stunned many critics by his interpretation of Bohuslav Martinů's Cello Sonatas which he recorded with pianist Olli Mustonen, released on Sweden-based BIS records in March 2014.
Jan Smaczny of BBC Music Magazine praises the recent recording of Martinů's Cello Sonatas 1-3 and claims Isserlis "gets to the heart of Martinů". Noting the tumultuous circumstances that led the author to composing these three pieces, Smaczny notes the "profound understanding and sympathy for Martinů's melodic and rhythmic idiom" and hails the performance as one to "treasure and comprise".
