The Cleveland Orchestra in Bratislava | Symphony No. 2

One of the world's most respected orchestras is returning to the Bratislava Music Festival after a two-year hiatus.

The Cleveland Orchestra is coming as part of its major European tour, conducted by principal conductor Franz Welser-Möst. The program will feature works by Liszt and Brahms alongside those by Martinů.

Martinů’s Symphony No. 2 H 295 has an exceptionally strong connection to Cleveland. The composer wrote it in 1943 during his wartime stay in the United States, commissioned by the Czech expatriate community in Cleveland, and dedicated it to his compatriots living in Ohio; that same year, on October 28, the Cleveland Orchestra, conducted by Erich Leinsdorf, premiered it there. The music thus embodies not only Martinů’s distinctive style but also the story of a homeland that can be carried with one even when far away from it.
