CSO Chamber Music | La revue de cuisine
Bohuslav Martinů’s Suite Kuchyňská revue, H 161a, will be performed on Sunday, October 11, 2026, at a chamber music concert organized by the University of Chicago’s Department of Music at Mandel Hall in Chicago. The program, part of the “CSO Chamber Music” series, is inspired by the field of “gastronomic musicology” and will feature compositions related to the themes of food and cooking. For this themed evening, the organizers have selected Bohuslav Martinů’s one-act ballet about kitchen utensils that come to life. The composer wrote the work in 1927 in Paris to a libretto by Jarmila Kröschlová. The story has a humorous, absurd plot. It tells of the marriage of Pot and Lid, which the elegant and seductive Mr. Broom attempts to break up, while Mrs. Dishcloth and Mr. Pot also vie for their affection. The composition combines the modern Parisian avant-garde of the time with popular dances of the 1920s – the suite features an energetic Charleston alongside a melancholic tango and a march.
The piece will be performed by members and guests of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO) in the original instrumentation: piano (Patrick Godon), violin (Yuan-Qing Yu), cello (Kenneth Olsen), clarinet (John Bruce Yeh), bassoon (Keith Buncke), and trumpet (Tage Larsen).
The second half of the program will feature a selection of works by American composer Paul Schoenfield.
