The Opera Finale – Frankfurt Opera’s annual series of events linked to the last new production of the season is dedicated to Martinů this year, and takes place between June 21st to July 12th, exploring Martinů's Julietta and Drei Einakter / Three One Act Operas.

„I think Martinů is the greatest musician of our times. He is a genius, who uses magic to create new worlds“, enthused Georges Ribemont-Dessaignes, librettist of the one act opera Messertränen / A Knife's Tears. Bohuslav Martinů is rightly considered to one of the most creative composers of the 20th century. Born in 1890 in Polička (Czechoslovakia), he began learning the violin when he was seven and soon starting composing, without any tuition. After a time playing the violin in the Czech Philharmonic in Prague, where he studied composition with Josef Suk for a while, Martinů moved to Paris in 1923. There, his reputation as a composer soon spread world wide. He emigrated to America in 1940, where he and his compositions concentrated increasingly on the existential question of human life, and where he was much sought after as a composition teacher at academies and universities. He returned to Europe in 1953, but never to his homeland. He died in Liestal, near Basel, in 1959. His more than 400 compositions – vocal and chamber music, orchestral works, operas and ballets – reflect influences from Czech folk music, French impressionism, neoclassicism and contemporaries, including the „Les Six“ and Igor Stravinsky, and jazz. While Martinů's music is not atonal and the musical forms traditional, its harmonies and rhythms were always innovative.
