Just released: New CD with Martinů Violin Concertos by Frank Peter Zimmerman, Jakub Hrůša and Bamberger Symphoniker

New CD with Violin Concertos by Martinů played by Frank Peter Zimmerman was just released by BIS Records. On the recording, Zimmerman is accompanied by Jakub Hrůša and the Bamberger Symphoniker. The disc closes with a central work in the twentieth-century literature for solo violin, Béla Bartók’s Sonata for Solo Violin.

On Sunday, Gardiner conducts Martinů in Prague

On this Sunday, 29th November, Sir John Eliot Gardiner will conduct the Czech Philharmonic in a live streamed concert. The first concert of the series Czech Philharmonic Live In Your Living Room will present music by Jan Václav Hugo Voříšek, Leoš Janáček and Bohuslav Martinů. Sir John Eliot Gardiner is not only a pioneer of historically informed performance, but also a big lover and promoter of the Czech music. Czech pianist Igor Ardašev will be the soloist in Capriccio for Piano Left Hand and Wind Ensemble and in the Sinfonietta La Jolla by Martinů - a piece composed in New York in 1950 for the La Jolla Music Society. The concert starts at 8,15 pm and will be broadcast on the Czech Television's Art Channel, Facebook page of the Czech Philharmonic and on the Takt1 platform in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

Martinů Incantation has won the BBC Music Magazine Award

The recording of Antonín Dvořák’s and Bohuslav Martinů’s piano concertos, made by the pianist Ivo Kahánek and the Bamberger Symphoniker under the baton of Jakub Hrůša, has garnered critical acclaim since its release last September. It has been voted BBC Radio 3 Disc of the Week, BBC Music Magazine Recording of the Month, Choix de Classique HD, Album der Woche – BR Klassik and Choc de Classica. And now the album has received the prestigious BBC Music Magazine Award in the „Concerto“ category.

Flutist Lois Schaefer has passed away

The flutist John Solum informed us about the sad news that Lois Schaefer, flute and piccolo player who gave the first performance of Bohuslav Martinů's Sonata for Flute and Piano, H 306, has died at age 95 on Jan. 31, 2020. Lois Schaefer gave the first performance in 1949 for the New York Flute Club, with Martinu at the performance. Lois studied in Boston with Georges Laurent, to whom the work is dedicated.

Juliette in Opera magazine

In January of this year the opera Juliette had its last performance in Ostrava, which was staged by the National Moravian-Silesian Theater for the first time in its history. Boston Symphony Orchestra at home: Double Concerto

The current global crisis is forcing orchestras and artists to come up with new ways to stay in touch with their audience despite cancelling their concerts. The Boston Symphony Orchestra has, for the fourth week in a row, selected interesting historical recordings from its rich archive. The Boston Orchestra often performed the music of Bohuslav Martinů mainly thanks to its chief conductors Serge Koussevitzky and Charles Munch. They had also commissioned number of new works which resulted in nine premieres of Martinů’s compositions by the BSO, such as La Bagarre, Symphony No. 1, Symphony No. 3 and Symphony No. 6 (Fantaisies Symphoniques). The Boston Symphony Orchestra now selects the historical recording of the Double Concerto for two string orchestras, piano and timpani under the direction of conductor Rafael Kubelik from 1967.

Artists from all over the world decided, despite cancelling most of their upcoming concerts, perform at least virtually for their fans. Jonas Kaufmann, Lang Lang, members of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Magdalena Kožená, among others, participated in an online festival organized by BR Klassik which live streamed their home concerts.
