Graham Melville-Mason has passed away

On February 2nd, Czech music and Bohuslav Martinů lost one of their most important foreign promoters. At the age of 85, the British musicologist, journalist and music organizer Graham Melville-Mason has passed away. He has led for many years the British Dvorak Society and worked as an honorary adviser of the International Music Festival Prague Spring. May he rest in peace!

On January, 24th, German musicologist Giselher Schubert turns 75. On this occasion, the director of the Bohuslav Martinů Institute Aleš Březina remembers their cooperation in an article, which will be published in the forthcoming issue of Martinů Revue.

Jakub Hrůša and the Czech Philharmonic will perform Symphony No. 5

Starting today, the Czech Philharmonic and Jakub Hrůša will exclusively dedicate three evenings in Rudolfinum to the music of Czech authors. In addition to the Concerto for Piano and Orchestra in G minor by Antonín Dvořák with pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard, they will perform Suita for orchestra “Festival of Straznice”, Op. 9 by Viktor Kalabis and Symphony No. 5 by Bohuslav Martinů. The Czech Philharmonic will also produce the audiovisual recording of the Bohuslav Martinů symphony, with cooperation with the Czech Television and the German company Unitel.

The Bennewitz Quartet awarded at the Classic Prague Awards 2018

Classic Prague Awards 2018 have announced winners in the category of „Best Chamber Music Performance“. The award was handed over to the Bennewitz Quartet for their performance of String Quartet No. 3 by Robert Schumann, String Quartet in D minor by Franz Schubert and String Quartet No. 3, H 183 by Bohuslav Martinů on January 29, 2018.

Jakub Hrůša and Ivo Kahánek will perform Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 4 (Incantation)

Two successful Czech artists, conductor Jakub Hrůša and pianist Ivo Kahánek, who are known for frequent promotion of Bohuslav Martinů, have a joint performance with Bamberger Symphoniker ahead of them. On January 18th and 19th, they will perform Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 4 (Incantation) by Martinů in accordance with the new critical edition. At the same time, they will record the Concerto for Supraphon which will be released this autumn together with Antonín Dvořák's Concerto for Piano and Orchestra in G minor.

Classic Prague Awards 2018: Artists nominated for Martinů

The third edition of the Classic Prague Awards will once again award the best performances, recordings and musicians of the previous year in Czech Republic. For the performance of Bohuslav Martinů’s music were nominated ensembles in three categories: Chamber Performance (Bennewitz Quartet), Vocal Performance (Kühn Children's Choir) and Recording of the Year (Martinů Voices). The festive announcement of the winners will take place on January 19, 2019 in the Municipal House, Prague, also live broadcasted by CT Art.

Frank Peter Zimmermann will perform Concerto for Violin and Orchestra No. 1 in Prague

The final concert of the Bohuslav Martinů Days Festival, which will take place on December 19th at 7.30 pm in Rudolfinum, Prague and again on December 20th and 21st, will offer the performance of the Czech Philharmonic led by Jakub Hrůša. The concert’s main star will be violinist Frank Peter Zimmermann, who performs the Concerto for Violin and Orchestra No. 1, H 226 by Bohuslav Martinů. The Czech Philharmonic will also perform Arthur Honegger's Christmas Cantata, Te Deum by Antonín Dvořák and the world premiere of the composition of Jiří Gemrot Resurrection of Light and Hope.

Bohuslav Martinů and Prague Spring 2019

The 74th International Music Festival Prague Spring will take place in May and June of the next year. The festival will offer several concerts with Bohuslav Martinů's music, for example his String Quartets Nos. 3 and 5, Fantasia for Theremin and Concert for Oboe and Small Orchestra.

Bohuslav Martinů Medal for conductor Petr Vronský

Conductor Petr Vronský was awarded the Bohuslav Martinů Medal during Bohuslav Martinů Foundation gala concert on December 14th. The Bohuslav Martinů Medal is handed over to prominent figures who have promoted Martinů's music and legacy. Among those who are awarded are, for example, Rudolf Firkušný, Zuzana Růžičková, Jiří Bělohlávek or Charles Mackerras. The concert took place in Martinů Hall, where Guarneri Trio Prague performed piano trios by Luboš Fišer, Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy and Bohuslav Martinů.

Prof. Jaroslav Mihule was given the Bohuslav Martinů Annual Award

At the concert of the Bohuslav Martinů Days Festival, the Bohuslav Martinů Annual Award was awarded to the prominent Czech musicologist Prof. Jaroslav Mihule for his merit in the scientific evaluation and promotion of the composer's work. Jaroslav Mihule is known as the author of publications on Martinů, he worked as a pedagogue and diplomat as well.

A new book, which deals with Martinů's musical philosophy, is out

Martinů's Subliminal States: A Study of the Composer's Writings and Reception, with a Translation of His "American Diaries" is now released by Boydell & Brewer publishing house. In the book, the author Thomas D. Svatos describes the political, cultural, and musical challenges that Martinů faced. The book also offers, for the first time, a translation of the composer's American Diaries, in which he set down his musical philosophy. The book is now available with 40 % discount (until next Wednesday).

Intimate benefit with one harpsichordist and two harpsichords

The Kaiserštejn Palace hosted on December 19th the 4th Benefit Concert to support the scientific activities of the Bohuslav Martinů Institute. The works of Viktor Kalabis, Johann Sebastian Bach and Bohuslav Martinů were performed by Iranian-American harpsichordist Mahan Esfahani. The performance of the world-renowned harpsichordist is reviewed by Petr Veber, who also deals with the purpose of the benefit concert and the new and upcoming volumes of the Bohuslav Martinů Complete Edition.

The Bohuslav Martinů Foundation Competition has its winners

Jury members selected the winners of the 23rd Bohuslav Martinů Foundation Competition. This year, students from Czech and Slovak music academies competed in the categories of violin and chamber ensembles with piano. The winner of violin category is Eva Schäferová, in the category of chamber ensembles was awarded Trio Incendio 1st Prize. On 25 November at 7.30 pm, the Academy of Music in Prague will host a concert of laureates.

The drawings of Martinů come from an exhibition of his own caricatures and sketches entitled "Martinů drawing pictures", which is now available in Polička. The Bohuslav Martinů Foundation Competition 2018

On 25 November at 7.30 pm, the Academy of Music in Prague will host a concert of laureates of the Bohuslav Martinů Foundation Competition; this year will see students from Czech and Slovak music academies vie in the categories of violin and chamber ensembles with piano. The contest has been helping talented young musicians jump-start their career since 1996, and successful laureates of previous years include Roman Patočka, Václav Petr, Tomáš Jamník, Olga Šroubková or Anna Paulová.

Martinů Festtage 2018 hosts Julia Fischer, David Dorůžka or Jiří Nekvasil

From November 10 to 25, the 24th Martinů Festtage festival is taking place in Basel. The traditional Swiss festival focuses on the music of Bohuslav Martinů, who had a close relationship with Switzerland, where he regularly visited Paul and Maja Sacher, composed several of his significant works, and in 1959 he spent the last days of his life. This year's festival will host violinist Julia Fischer, David Dorůžka‘s jazz trio or Orchestra de Chambre de Lausanne, among others. The TV version of the opera What Men Live By will be screened during the festival.

Miloslav Bureš, author of the text for the Opening of the Springs, passed away fifty years ago

On November 12th, fifty years ago, Czech poet Miloslav Bureš has passed away. Born in Polička, Miloslav Bureš was close friend of Bohuslav Martinů, whom he visited in 1957 and 1959 in Italy and Switzerland. Bureš's texts were used by Martinů for his four cantatas: the Legend of the Smoke from Potato Tips, Mikesh from the Mountains, a Dandelion Romance and one of his most prominent compositions Opening of the Springs, which he dedicated to Miloslav Bureš.

Pure Joy. Frank Peter Zimmermann on Bohuslav Martinů and his Violin Concerto

Since his debut in 1985 the violinist Frank Peter Zimmermann has been one of the guest artists to regularly and frequently perform with the Berlin Philharmonic. Over the years he has interpreted all the major violin concertos with this ensemble. But what is more, he has also peppered his repertoire with less-known compositions. With rare works that deserve to be rediscovered. This season he is playing Bohuslav Martinů’s Violin Concerto No. 1 under the direction of Jakub Hrůša. We asked Frank Peter Zimmermann to tell us a bit about the wonders and challenges of the composition.

Mahan Esfahani's invitation to the benefit concert for the Bohuslav Martinů Institute

On Monday, November 19, the fourth benefit concert will be held to support the scientific work of the Bohuslav Martinů Institute, whose main task since 2014 is to publish the work of Martinů in critical editions. Every year, at its benefit concerts, there perform significant artists, such were Enrico Pieranunzi, Josef Špaček, Martina Janková, Ivo Kahanek and others. This year, internationally acclaimed Iranian-American harpsichordist Mahan Esfahani accepted the invitation of the Bohuslav Martinů Institute.
