New recording of What Men Live By prasied in reviews

Just a few days after the release of the opera recording What Men Live By, the album is taken into notice by Czech and foreign reviewers. The one-act opera by Bohuslav Martinů, performed by the Czech Philharmonic, Jiří Bělohlávek and others, was awarded Recording of the Week by Presto Classical, and the Czech Radio Vltava called it Album of the Day.

Jiří Bělohlávek's final word on the music of Bohuslav Martinů

One of the most important events in classical music this autumn will be the release of a recording of Bohuslav Martinů’s pastoral opera What Men Live By, wonderfully performed by Jiří Bělohlávek with the Czech Philharmonic and a whole host of important soloists. The world premiere recording will be released by Supraphon both on CD and in digital formats on 19th October 2018.

On Sunday, October 14th, cellist and member of the Bohuslav Martinů Foundation‘s Board of Directors Bohuslav Pavlas turned 70 years old. He performed at more than 1200 concerts and collaborated with artists, such as Jiří Bělohlávek, Josef Suk or Charles Mackerras.

Jakub Hrůša's debut with Berliner Philharmoniker in reviews

At the three concerts from October 11th to 13th, conductor Jakub Hrůša conducted for the first time the Berliner Philharmoniker. President of the International Martinů Circle chose to perform Czech program, with the Martinů's Concerto for Violin and Orchestra No. 1 naturally being in the spotlight, also because of the renowned soloist Frank Peter Zimmermann. Music reviewers (The Classical Source, Harmonie and KlasikaPlus.cz) praised the performance almost without objections.

Jakub Hrůša for the first time with Berliner Philharmoniker

Another great success for Czech conductor Jakub Hrůša was his debut with Berliner Philharmoniker on Thursday, October 11. He chose purely Czech programme for his first performance with the renowned orchestra: Dvořák's Golden Spinning Wheel, Janáček's Taras Bulba and Concerto for Violin and Orchestra No. 1 by Bohuslav Martinů, in which soloist Frank Peter Zimmermann took part. Another performance is scheduled for October 12 and 13, the Saturday concert will be live-streamed within the Digital Concert Hall.

Prof. Jiří Hlaváč celebrates his 70th birthday. Congratulations!

On Friday, October 12, clarinetist, pedagogue and director of the Bohuslav Martinů Foundation professor Jiří Hlaváč, celebrated his 70th birthday. On this occasion, a congratulatory concert will take place on October 20th at the Martinů Hall, where the Dvořák Chamber Orchestra, conductor Jaroslav Vodňanský and Professor Jiří Hlaváč will perform works by Martinů, Janáček, Svoboda, Richter and Hlaváč.

Violist prof. Lubomír Malý was awarded the Bohuslav Martinů Medal

Violist prof. Lubomír Malý, who recently celebrated his 80th birthday, was given the Bohuslav Martinů Foundation Medal during the Bohuslav Martinů Days Festival 2018 press conference. The Bohuslav Martinů Medal is handed over to prominent figures who have promoted Martinů's music and legacy. Among those who are awarded are, for example, Rudolf Firkušný, Zuzana Růžičková, Jiří Bělohlávek or Sir Charles Mackerras.

11 superb concerts in Prague for this year's the Bohuslav Martinů Days

The Bohuslav Martinů Days, running from 18 November to 19 December this year, will offer eleven performances of some of the most prominent artists of the Czech and international music scenes. The festival will welcome Petr Nouzovský and the Pilsen Philharmonic, Ivo Kahánek, Frank Peter Zimmermann and the Czech Philharmonic under the direction of Jakub Hrůša, the Wihan Quartet, Anna Paulová, and the Guarneri Trio, among others. Martinů’s music will also be celebrated by subscription concerts of the Czech Chamber Music Society, the Prague Radio Orchestra, and the Prague Castle Guard Band.

Jiří Rožeň makes his debut with BBC Philharmonic

Young Czech conductor Jiří Rožeň made his debut with BBC Philharmonic on September 26, when they performed Martinů's final symphony, his 'Fantaisies symphoniques', and one of Dvořák’s Serenade for Strings. The performance was broadcasted live on BBC Radio 3.

New volume of the Bohuslav Martinů Complete Edition with Quadruple Concertos is out

Another volume from the Bohuslav Martinů Complete Edition is released by Bärenreiter. The sixth volume which was prepared by the Bohuslav Martinů Institute deals with Martinů’s "Quadruple Concertos" (Concerto for String Quartet and Orchestra and Sinfonia concertante). This new volume will be presented at the benefit concert for the Bohuslav Martinů Institute on November 19, where cembalist Mahan Esfahani will perform works by Bach, Martinů and Kalabis.

Max Kellerhals would turn 100 today

Today, a great lover of music, a Swiss priest and a close friend of Bohuslav Martinů Max Kellerhals (24. 9. 1918 - 24. 8. 2013) would be 100 years old. He was a priest in municipalities in the canton of Basel–Landschaft, near Liestal, the town in which Bohuslav Martinů died. Max Kellerhals accompanied Bohuslav Martinů in the final days of his life and participated in organising his funeral in Switzerland and, twenty years later, the transportation of the composer’s remains to Czechoslovakia.

Promising start. Bohuslav Martinů Complete Edition in Opus musicum

The latest issue of Opus musicum includes a review of the Bohuslav Martinů Complete Edition. Praise is lavished on the edition by doc. Jiří Zahrádka of Masaryk University, who took a detailed look at two volumes, The Epic of Gilgamesh (ed. Aleš Březina) and Cantatas on texts by Miloslav Bureš (ed. Vít Zouhar). Juliette for the first time in the USA

In 2019, the US premiere of Bohuslav Martinů’s opera Juliette (The Key to Dreams), H 253 will take place in Carnegie Hall, New York City. The concert performance of Martinů´s most succesful opera will take place in Czech on 22nd March by the American Symphony Orchestra under the baton of its music director and chief-conductor Leon Botstein.

A new TV one-act opera by Bohuslav Martinů What Men Live By will have its premiere on September 21 at 19.30 at the New Stage of the National Theatre in Prague. It will be screened at the International Televison Festival Golden Prague which is organised by Czech Televison.

Dr Jiří Pilka has passed away

On July 7, musicologist, music popularizer, radio and television concert moderator and publicist Jiří Pilka has passed away in the age of 88. He was a longtime member of the B ohuslav Martinů Foundation Supervisory Board and in 2012 was awarded a Bohuslav Martinů Foundation Medal thanks to his promotion of Martinů’s work.

Gennady Rozhdestvensky has passed away at the age of 87

One of the world's most famous conductors Gennady Rozhdestvensky passed away on Saturday, June 16th. Rozhdestvensky, who was also a composer and pianist, was one of the founding members of the Bohuslav Martinů Society, International Martinů Circle, and for his lifetime promotion of Martinů 's work was awarded the Bohuslav Martinů Foundation Medal in 2003.
