Graham Melville-Mason is surely well known to all lovers of Czech music. This British musicologist, writer and organizer led British Dvořák Society and also worked as an honorary advisor of the Prague Spring Festival. At the beginning of March, he celebrated his 85th birthday which did not escape attention of cellist and member of the Martinů Quartet Jitka Vlašánková, longtime friend of this great promoter of Czech music and music of Bohuslav Martinů.→ More

Diapason d'Or for the Epic of Gilgamesh
The new recording of the Epic of Gilgamesh released by Supraphon last October received another prestigious award. In the February issue of the most prominent French magazine Diapason, it received the Diapason d'Or. The festive launch of the fifth volume of the Bohuslav Martinů Complete Edition
The director of the Bohuslav Martinů Institute Aleš Březina and violinist and composer Pravoslav Kohout launched the fifth volume of the Bohuslav Martinů Complete Edition on March 6. This volume contains critical edition of String Quartets Nos. 4 – 7 which Martinů composed between 1937 and 1947. The festive launch took place at the Bedřich Smetana Museum where the Stamic Quartet performed Martinů’s String Quartet No. 7 (Concerto da camera), H 314.→ More

Juliette in the National Theatre in Prague 80 years after the world premiere
Bohuslav Martinů’s most famous opera Juliette was premiered in Prague on March 16, 1938. The Opera of the National Theatre in Prague will commemorate the 80th anniversary of the world premiere with the best way possible - with a performance of the opera. The anniversary will be also commemorated by the exhibition in Václav Havel Square, which will be held until March 21. It features photographs from the first and current production of Juliette or of the original score. The National Theatre in Prague also participates for the first time in the project Operavision.eu which broadcasts the opera online.→ More

Premiere of Juliette in Wuppertal
On March 3, Bohuslav Martinů’s opera Julliete (The Key to Dreams), H 253 will be premiered in Wuppertal. Director of the production is Inga Levant, the orchestra of Wuppertaler Bühnen will lead young Austrian conductor Johannes Pell. Main soloists are Ralitsa Ralin as Juliette and Sangmin Jeon as Michel.→ More

Festive launch of the new volume of the BMCE
Festive launch of the critical edition of String Quartets Nos. 4 – 7 composed during 1937 and 1947 by Bohuslav Martinů will take place on March 6, 2018 at the Bedřich Smetana Museum. It is already the fifth volume of the Bohuslav Martinů Complete Edition which is prepared by the Bohuslav Martinů Institute with the support of the Bohuslav Martinů Foundation and published by Bärenreiter. Dr. František Popelka turns 85
Those interested in Bohuslav Martinů and his music are most likely to know of Dr. František Popelka, an ardent promoter of the composer’s legacy. This year, he is celebrating a significant anniversary (he was born on 19 February 1933 in Polička). The “Dr.” before his name is of importance for the Polička natives, so as to distinguish him from his father, František Popelka, Sr. (1908-1989), a violinist, bibliophile, museum curator and an “old-school” enthusiast, who too was a great champion of Martinů’s music. In order not to be mistaken for his father. Dr. Popelka also signed himself as “Iša”, the children’s form of his first name.→ More

The Prague Philharmonic Choir will perform Martinů in the Mariinsky Theater
The Prague Philharmonic Choir prepares for the first ever tour to Russia. Its three performances in the most prestigious concert halls of St. Petersburg and Moscow will offer music of Czech composers such as Leoš Janáček, Bohuslav Martinů and Antonín Dvořák. The Prague Philharmonic Choir, led by its choirmaster Lukáš Vasilek, will perform on February 12 the Cantatas of the Czech Highlands by Bohuslav Martinů, in one of the most famous opera houses, in the concert hall of the Mariinsky Theater together with Pavla Vykopalová (soprano), Jana Hrochová (alto), Martin Slavík (tenor) and Jiří Brückler (baritone).→ More

Bohuslav Martinů's Cantatas nominated for the BBC Music Magazine Award
The Supraphon album with Bohuslav Martinů’s four cantatas from the Czech Highlands has appeared among three albums nominated for the BBC Music Magazine Award in the category of choral works (Choral Award). The cantatas on texts by Miloslav Bureš were recorded by the Prague Philharmonic Choir with choirmaster Lukáš Vasilek and soloists. The Classic Prague Awards 2017 will award the best that has happened in the past year in the Czech Republic in the field of classical music. An unique album with complete Martinů’s works for cello and orchestra was released by German publishing house Dabringhaus und Grimm. This double CD was recorded by cellist Petr Nouzovský together with Pilsen Philharmonic and conductor Tomáš Brauner. Third volume of Early Ochestral Works is out
Toccata Classics released third volume of early orchestral works by Bohuslav Martinů. This series has offered, for example, the first recording of the ballet Shadow, H 102. In the following years, two more volumes are going to be released. As in previous albums, orchestra Sinfonia Varsovia with British conductor Ian Hobson perform Martinů’s early and almost forgotten pieces.→ More

73rd Prague Spring and Bohuslav Martinů
The 73rd International Music Festival Prague Spring will offer around 50 concerts between 12 May and 3 June 2018. Its main dramaturgical line will be the commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the foundation of Czechoslovakia, which will be celebrated by the music of Czech and Slovak authors, whose works create a modern cultural picture of Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic abroad. One of the main representatives of these authors is Bohuslav Martinů, his music will be performed for instance at the concerts of the Czech Philharmonic or Janáček Philharmonic Orchestra.→ More
